About this board

I am a consul, who also holds the bureaucrat and administrator bits, on Public Test Wiki.

If you:

  • Have a question, please start a new thread
  • Want administrator or other user rights, request it here or at RfP
  • Want bureaucrat permissions, ideally, request it at RfP, but you can also request it here so long as you are familiar with the granting guidelines
  • Have come here because I left you a message on your user talk page or elsewhere, please reply on that page and {{ping}} me so I am aware that you have replied, in order to keep the discussions together

In all cases, please remember to assume good faith

Fine thanks. :)

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Hello Doug. I was just patrolling community portal and found this discussion is still open. What step has been taken to make the criteria for granting 'crat consistent? Thanks!

Doug (talkcontribs)
Juslit (talkcontribs)

Hello Doug, I saw you deleted a page in my Userspace (User:Juslit/common.js) with the reason "author request". I didn't requested you to do so?

Doug (talkcontribs)

Juslit A single author, usually in their own userspace, blanking a page is commonly taken as an author request for deletion, on both Wikimedia and Miraheze wikis. I can restore it if you want, or you can restore it if you still need it.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Ok thanks for the explanation. I'll restore it myself as a past if my routine testing.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Juslit  Sounds good to me actually, as it is a testing wiki afterall. And, in fairness, it was probably a bit quick of me to assume you requested deletion by blanking in that case. In future, I'll wait until you or others are inactive for more than a month or two before deleting page blanking pages, as a best practice.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Done, but please do fix the broken template transclusion on that page. Thanks!

Rots62 (talkcontribs)

Why? I don't get it, I need this for a special project.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Well, that's fine, yeah, but if you look at the text on the page, the substituted template is incomplete (i.e., it did not substitute), so should that not be fixed, or, if not, how come?

Doug (talkcontribs)

Oh, nevermind, I see the <noinclude/>.

Anton (talkcontribs)

We have spambot again there Testwiki. (I blocked the account, no worries).

This newly blocked spambot has a talkpage with a "Welcome" message. What do we do with cases where the spambot has a talkpage and there is only a welcome? So the question is mainly because such talkpages should be removed, as well as locked globally? And do we have any policy or official guidance on Testwiki to send a Welcome message to new users. I have noticed recently a user of the sending welcome messages to new users.. And there’s nothing in it, but I might not find it worthwhile precisely because some of the new users are spambots. However, welcome is a beautiful gesture. Wouldn't it be worthwhile to introduce an automatic bot (extension) that automatically sends a Welcome message to new users? But the main topic is what we do with this spambot talkpage on Testwiki. Thanks.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton, thanks. I'll leave this topic open and you can just add to this list. When there's, say, 10 or more accounts to lock and investigate, I'll do that.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton, regarding your question, this.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

What are spambots? I don't even know who they are! How do you spot them?

Doug (talkcontribs)

Special:AbuseLog. They'll usually trigger, multiple times, global abuse filters governing anti-spam words and external links from new, non-autoconfirmed users.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Just like this. And thanks Dmehus, for the reply and talkpage removal. And Olipino, because no policies tell you to send a welcome (though beautiful), I don’t recommend sending them anymore. Precisely because there are unfortunately a large number of spambots and they need to be blocked, and finally the steward (like Dmehus) locks them globally.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton Yeah, I mean, Olipino can still send {{welcome}} messages, but just only to users who have made at least 1 edit on TestWiki. If they've made 0 edits, then yeah, it's best just to not send a welcome message.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Noted:)

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton I was going to leave this topic open, for the reason indicated here, so you could add additional spambots to the list, but if you'd prefer to list them elsewhere, that's fine, too. In any event, I am active enough on TestWiki to resolve my own topics. I'll wait to hear from you whether you'd prefer to list the spambots here, or elsewhere on TestWiki. Thanks.

DarkMatterMan4500 (talkcontribs)

How are you doing today on this good Tuesday anyway?

Doug (talkcontribs)

Fine, thanks. And you?

DarkMatterMan4500 (talkcontribs)

I'm doing fine.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Hello Doug, just saw you had blocked Theory of Eternity and wanted to clarify that I am also blocked on English Wikipedia for violating the sockpuppet policy. I just wanted to confirm that will it affect my presence on Miraheze.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Juslit No, that won't affect you at all. In fact, to clarify, Theory of Eternity was not blocked and locked on Miraheze because of their status on Wikimedia, and, additionally, whether Theory of Eternity/Bugambilia/Skiyomi is unlocked on the Wikimedia projects would not likely impact their potential future successful appeal on Miraheze. The reason they were blocked and locked on Miraheze was because of continued contravention of user accounts policy on Miraheze. The only reason I referenced their confirmed Wikimedia accounts was to call in question their apparently deliberate act of deception. Hope that helps.

Summary by Doug

Global rename for Juslit  completed.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Hello Doug, I've recently filed a username change request. Will you please process it. The reason is given on the request. Thank you!

Doug (talkcontribs)

Thank you. I will try and process it in the next several days.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

OK. No need to hurry.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Olipino, one question. You haven’t officially changed your name yet, but how do you want to explain this edit, where your signature is anything but no Olipino? The only good thing is that even if the username in the signature for that change is not correct, it will take you to the right userpage. However, could you edit your username back to normal because you are not yet in Jusl¡t. This is confusing, and the userpage (or signature) must not be confusing.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

I think it is not a big issue. On enwiki I have seen many established users whose username is different from signatures. It is my preference to keep Jusl¡t as my signature. Moreover, in few days I may be renamed to Juslit also. So, I think, it is not necessary to change my signature.

Juslit (talkcontribs)

Hello Doug, will you change my name now! It has been 5 days since I requested! Thank

Doug (talkcontribs)

Juslit, I've now  completed your global rename.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Olipino, apologies for the delay. Please remember we have other priorities. Nevertheless, I will try and get to your rename today.

Interface administrator

Anton requesting interface-admin with a valid need.  Granted by Consul RhinosF1.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Hi, because you are a consul, I will ask you this. I read this information page from interface administrators. Since I would like to fix and fix sidewide system messages and take a closer look at useful Gadgets, I am asking you for the confidential task of interface administrator. Thanks,

Anton (talkcontribs)

And I ask this also because you took the rights to edit system messages from bureaucrats on ManageWiki.

RhinosF1 (talkcontribs)

Granted Please be careful with your usage as it affects all users rather than just you.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Of course, thank you.

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton The reason is because only Consuls could edit other users' CSS/JS files, so in talking to Naleksuh, HeartsDo, and Reception123, we determined the best course of action would be to recreate the interface-admin user group. We could've left the sitewide CSS/JS user rights in bureaucrat, I suppose, but did seem a bit redundant. Note, though, that one does not need interface-admin to edit interface messages, as any sysop can do this as it only requires the editinterface user right. Please do be careful with adding too many unnecessary system messages, though, or to making potentially controversial changes, as RhinosF1 said above.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Yes Dmehus, thanks. --Anton (talk) 19:41, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Bureaucrat in user Example

9
Summary by Doug

Various unrelated follow up questions related to the Translate extension ensued, but primary question was to removing the bureaucrat bit from User:Example. Anton advised that though this is not a common test, it's a reasonable test action, and so they did the correct thing requesting removal of the bureaucrat bit from a current Consul, and advised to see Special:ListGroupRights#bureaucrat of groups they can add and remove.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Hi! I tried to give Example the rights of a bureaucrat and administrator and I succeeded, but now the rights of a bureaucrat remain ... I can't remove them from Example, so could you steward do it? Apologies for this .. :D

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton You did the right thing by testing with Special:UserRights on User:Example, but for mainly technical reasons, only Consuls can revoke the bureaucrat bit from users, so, while this is an uncommon occurrence of bureaucrats granting the bureaucrat bit to User:Example, this is a reasonable test per TestWiki:Testing policy, and so, you did the correct thing by requesting a current Consul to remove the bit from the user in question. As such, this is now  done. Thank you for your notification!

Doug (talkcontribs)

As a procedural point of clarification, a Steward would only be involved on TestWiki if either (a) all local Consuls were inactive for a significant period of time or (b) there was a request from the community that could only be effected technically by a Steward. Hope that helps.

Anton (talkcontribs)

Do you mean there are too few consuls on TestWiki? What rights do they have then? Are they just granted for that, for example, to me? Today, I have otherwise been active in the community MirahezianI did translations from morning until evening, and now I have been following, inter alia, Community noticeboard. I helped a user with his problem and he got it fixed. I feel like my activities in Miraheze have got off to a really nice start!

Doug (talkcontribs)

Anton Yes, your early translations on Meta have been constructive so far, from what I've seen. You may also want to review the translation administrator guidelines (on Meta Wiki), follow those guidelines, and set up a temporary page in your own userspace here on TestWiki, preparing it for translation. Ensure when you are done that you complete the deletion of all translation subpages and translation units before removing it from the translation system.

As to whether there are too few Consuls, I would say we have about the right number at the moment, though I do concede that some are quite or relatively inactive. It's largely only myself, Reception123, and Void that are active of late, though even Void would probably acknowledge his activity on TestWiki has largely been related to his Steward duties (i.e., global renames, etc.). Generally speaking, Consuls are like the non-test bureaucrats and administrators of TestWiki. Anyone can request to be a Consul at TestWiki:Community portal, but unlike the other rights, it does require a community vote. The community generally wants to see both a need and significant activity (both log actions and editing contributions).

One other possibility is that you may want to consider requesting local interwiki administrator on TestWiki. I recently created the local user group documentation page. Officially, it does require a local vote at TestWiki:Community portal, but there are no other local community-approved policy requirements. Thus, as long as you meet the prerequisites (whether locally or globally) and abide by the global policy, this may be something you'd be interested in for the purposes of experimentation and knowledge acquisition

Doug (talkcontribs)
Anton (talkcontribs)

Yes, I would like to be Meta Miraheze’s translation administrator and wiki creator and I try to garner users ’trust in it. I also noticed there Community noticeboard that have come reports from users, which would require Administrator rights on the wiki and thought that sometimes I could ask also those rights. About translation maintenance:

I will then mark my user subpage (Anton / Test) for translation and then delete it. I have the Translate extension on my own wiki and I can mark pages for translation.S

Can you say when will I get translation administrator rights? And was it only after a week or two that I could get the rights of a wiki creator?

Anton (talkcontribs)

I marked the page User:Anton/Test for translation and made the translation into Finnish, starting from English. That said, I have held the marking of pages to be translated :) Now I'm certainly proved my monitor how the technology works? I’m looking forward to someday becoming a wiki creator and creating wikis. I've been following an active farmer log Page and held what requests should reject and what to accept.

Doug (talkcontribs)

That's all good. Though it seems fine that you nuked the pages, best practice for deleting translation pages is to let FuzzyBot process and handle it.
